וכנשו פלשתאי ית משריתיהון לאגחא קרבא ואתכנשו לשוכה די לשבט יהודה ושרו בין שוכה ובין עזקה באפס דמים:
dmym baps ezqh wbyn shwkh byn wshrw yhwdh lshbT dy lshwkh wathknshw qrba lagkha mshrythyhwn yth plshthay wknshw
Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle; and they were gathered together at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah in Ephesdammim.

ושאול ואנש ישראל אתכנישו ושרו במישר בוטמא וסדרו קרבא לקדמות פלשתאי:
plshthay lqdmwth qrba wsdrw bwTma bmyshr wshrw athknyshw yshral wansh wshawl
Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and encamped in the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.

ופלשתאי קימין על טורא מכא וישראל קימין על טורא מכא וחילתא ביניהון:
bynyhwn wkhyltha mka Twra el qymyn wyshral mka Twra el qymyn wplshthay
The Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.

ונפק גברא מביניהון ממשרית פלשתאי גלית שמיה מגת רומיה שתא אמין וזירתא:
wzyrtha amyn shtha rwmyh mgth shmyh glyth plshthay mmshryth mbynyhwn gbra wnpq
A champion out of the camp of the Philistines named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span went out.

וקולס דנחש על רישיה ושרין גלבין הוא לביש ומתקל שריונא חמשא אלפין תקלי נחשא:
nkhsha thqly alpyn khmsha shrywna wmthql lbysh hwa glbyn wshryn ryshyh el dnkhsh wqwls
He had a helmet of bronze on his head, and he wore a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze.

וטרקלילין דנחש על רגלוהי ומסחפא דנחשא נפיק מן קולסא ומטל בין כתפוהי:
kthpwhy byn wmTl qwlsa mn npyq dnkhsha wmskhpa rglwhy el dnkhsh wTrqlylyn
He had bronze shin armor on his legs and a bronze javelin between his shoulders.

ואעא דמורניתיה כאכסן דגרדאין ושננא דמורניתיה מתקל שית מאה תקלי פרזלא ונטל תריסא אזיל קדמוהי:
qdmwhy azyl thrysa wnTl przla thqly mah shyth mthql dmwrnythyh wshnna dgrdayn kaksn dmwrnythyh waea
The staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam; and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron. His shield bearer went before him.

וקם ואכריז על סדרי ישראל ואמר להון למה תפקון לסדרא קרבא הלא אנא פלשתאה ואתון עבדין לשאול בחרו לכון גברא ויחות לותי:
lwthy wykhwth gbra lkwn bkhrw lshawl ebdyn wathwn plshthah ana hla qrba lsdra thpqwn lmh lhwn wamr yshral sdry el wakryz wqm
He stood and cried to the armies of Israel, and said to them, “Why have you come out to set your battle in array? Am I not a Philistine, and you servants to Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me.

אם יכול לאגחא קרבא עמי ויקטלינני ונהי לכון לעבדין ואם אנא אכול ליה ואקטליניה ותהון לנא לעבדין ותפלחון יתנא:
ythna wthplkhwn lebdyn lna wthhwn waqTlynyh lyh akwl ana wam lebdyn lkwn wnhy wyqTlynny emy qrba lagkha ykwl am
If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then will we be your servants; but if I prevail against him and kill him, then you will be our servants and serve us.”

ואמר פלשתאה אנא חסדית ית סדרי ישראל יומא דין למימר איתו לי גברא ונגיח קרבא כחדא:
kkhda qrba wngykh gbra ly aythw lmymr dyn ywma yshral sdry yth khsdyth ana plshthah wamr
The Philistine said, “I defy the armies of Israel today! Give me a man, that we may fight together!”

ושמע שאול וכל ישראל ית פתגמי פלשתאה האלין ואתברו ודחילו לחדא:
lkhda wdkhylw wathbrw halyn plshthah pthgmy yth yshral wkl shawl wshme
When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.

ודוד בר גבר אפרתי הדין מבית לחם דבית יהודה ושמיה ישי וליה תמניא בנין וגברא ביומי שאול סיב מני בבחיריא:
bbkhyrya mny syb shawl bywmy wgbra bnyn thmnya wlyh yshy wshmyh yhwdh dbyth lkhm mbyth hdyn aprthy gbr br wdwd
Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem Judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons. The man was an elderly old man in the days of Saul.

ואזלו תלתא בני ישי רברביא אזלו בתר שאול לקרבא ושום תלתא בנוהי דאזלו לקרבא אליאב בוכרא ותניניה אבינדב ותליתאה שמה:
shmh wthlythah abyndb wthnynyh bwkra alyab lqrba dazlw bnwhy thltha wshwm lqrba shawl bthr azlw rbrbya yshy bny thltha wazlw
The three oldest sons of Jesse had gone after Saul to the battle; and the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

ודוד הוא זעירא ותלתא רברביא אזלו בתר שאול:
shawl bthr azlw rbrbya wthltha zeyra hwa wdwd
David was the youngest; and the three oldest followed Saul.
15
ודוד אזל ותב מלות שאול למרעי ית ענא דאבוהי בית לחם:
lkhm byth dabwhy ena yth lmrey shawl mlwth wthb azl wdwd
Now David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.
16
וקריב פלשתאה ומקדים ומחשיך ואתעתד ארבעין יומין:
ywmyn arbeyn wathethd wmkhshyk wmqdym plshthah wqryb
The Philistine came near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.
17
ואמר ישי לדוד בריה סב כען לאחיך מכילתא דקליא הדין ועסרא טולמין דלחמא הדין ואוביל למשריתא לאחיך:
lakhyk lmshrytha wawbyl hdyn dlkhma Twlmyn wesra hdyn dqlya mkyltha lakhyk ken sb bryh ldwd yshy wamr
Jesse said to David his son, “Now take for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to your brothers;

וית עסר גובנין דחלבא האלין תוביל לרב אלפא וית אחיך תסער לשלם וית טיביהון תיתי:
thythy Tybyhwn wyth lshlm thser akhyk wyth alpa lrb thwbyl halyn dkhlba gwbnyn esr wyth
and bring these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand; and see how your brothers are doing, and bring back news.”

ושאול ואינון וכל אנש ישראל במישר בוטמא מגיחין קרבא עם פלשתאי:
plshthay em qrba mgykhyn bwTma bmyshr yshral ansh wkl waynwn wshawl
Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

ואקדם דוד בצפרא ושבק ית ענא על נטרא ונסיב ואזל כמה דפקדיה ישי ואתא לכרכומא ומשרית עבדי קרבא נפקו לסידרא ויביבו בקרבא:
bqrba wybybw lsydra npqw qrba ebdy wmshryth lkrkwma watha yshy dpqdyh kmh wazl wnsyb nTra el ena yth wshbq btspra dwd waqdm
David rose up early in the morning and left the sheep with a keeper, and took the provisions and went, as Jesse had commanded him. He came to the place of the wagons as the army which was going out to the fight shouted for the battle.
21
וסדרו ישראל ופלשתאי סדרא לקדמות סדרא:
sdra lqdmwth sdra wplshthay yshral wsdrw
Israel and the Philistines put the battle in array, army against army.
22
ושבק דוד ית מניא די עלוהי על יד נטיר מניא ורהט לסדרא ואתא ושאל לאחוהי בשלם:
bshlm lakhwhy wshal watha lsdra wrhT mnya nTyr yd el elwhy dy mnya yth dwd wshbq
David left his baggage in the hand of the keeper of the baggage and ran to the army, and came and greeted his brothers.

והוא ממליל עמהון והא גברא מביניהון סליק גלית פלשתאה שמיה מגת מסדרי פלשתאי ומליל כפתגמיא האלין ושמע דוד:
dwd wshme halyn kpthgmya wmlyl plshthay msdry mgth shmyh plshthah glyth slyq mbynyhwn gbra wha emhwn mmlyl whwa
As he talked with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up out of the ranks of the Philistines, and said the same words; and David heard them.
24
וכל אנש ישראל במחזיהון ית גברא ואפיכו מן קדמוהי ודחילו לחדא:
lkhda wdkhylw qdmwhy mn wapykw gbra yth bmkhzyhwn yshral ansh wkl
All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were terrified.

ואמר אנש ישראל החזיתון גברא דסליק הדין ארי לחסדא ית ישראל סליק ויהי גברא דיקטליניה יעתריניה מלכא עותר סגי וית ברתיה יתן ליה וית בית אבוהי יעביד חורין רברבין בישראל:
byshral rbrbyn khwryn yebyd abwhy byth wyth lyh ythn brthyh wyth sgy ewthr mlka yethrynyh dyqTlynyh gbra wyhy slyq yshral yth lkhsda ary hdyn dslyq gbra hkhzythwn yshral ansh wamr
The men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? He has surely come up to defy Israel. The king will give great riches to the man who kills him, and will give him his daughter, and will make his father’s house tax-free in Israel.”

ואמר דוד לגבריא דקימין עמיה למימר מה יתעביד לגברא דיקטול ית פלישתאה דיכי ויעדי חסודא מעל ישראל ארי מן פלשתאה ערלא הדין ארי חסד סדרי עבדי קרבא דעמיה דיי קימא:
qyma dyy demyh qrba ebdy sdry khsd ary hdyn erla plshthah mn ary yshral mel khswda wyedy dyky plyshthah yth dyqTwl lgbra ythebyd mh lmymr emyh dqymyn lgbrya dwd wamr
David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done to the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
27
ואמר ליה עמא כפתגמא הדין למימר כדין יתעביד לגברא דיקטליניה:
dyqTlynyh lgbra ythebyd kdyn lmymr hdyn kpthgma ema lyh wamr
The people answered him in this way, saying, “So shall it be done to the man who kills him.”
28
ושמע אליאב אחוהי רבא במללותיה עם גבריא ותקיף רוגזא דאליאב בדוד ואמר למה דנן נחתתא ועל מן רטשתא זעיר ענא האינון במדברא אנא ידענא ית בקרנותך וית בישות לבך ארי בדיל למחזי עבדי קרבא נחתתא:
nkhththa qrba ebdy lmkhzy bdyl ary lbk byshwth wyth bqrnwthk yth ydena ana bmdbra haynwn ena zeyr rTshtha mn wel nkhththa dnn lmh wamr bdwd dalyab rwgza wthqyp gbrya em bmllwthyh rba akhwhy alyab wshme
Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger burned against David, and he said, “Why have you come down? With whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the evil of your heart; for you have come down that you might see the battle.”

ואמר דוד מה עבדית כען הלא פתגם הוא דאמרית:
damryth hwa pthgm hla ken ebdyth mh dwd wamr
David said, “What have I now done? Is there not a cause?”
30
ואסתחר מלותיה לקביל אוחרן ואמר כפתגמא הדין ואתיבוהי עמא פתגמא כפתגמא קדמאה:
qdmah kpthgma pthgma ema wathybwhy hdyn kpthgma wamr awkhrn lqbyl mlwthyh wasthkhr
He turned away from him toward another, and spoke like that again; and the people answered him again the same way.
31
ואשתמעו פתגמיא דמליל דוד וחויאו קדם שאול ודברהי:
wdbrhy shawl qdm wkhwyaw dwd dmlyl pthgmya washthmew
When the words were heard which David spoke, they rehearsed them before Saul; and he sent for him.
32
ואמר דוד לשאול לא יתבר לבא דאנשא מניה עבדך ייזיל ויגיח קרבא עם פלשתאה הדין:
hdyn plshthah em qrba wygykh yyzyl ebdk mnyh dansha lba ythbr la lshawl dwd wamr
David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”
33
ואמר שאול לדוד לא תכול למיזל עם פלשתאה הדין לאגחא קרבא עמיה ארי יניק את והוא גבר עביד קרבין מינקותיה:
mynqwthyh qrbyn ebyd gbr whwa ath ynyq ary emyh qrba lagkha hdyn plshthah em lmyzl thkwl la ldwd shawl wamr
Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.”
34
ואמר דוד לשאול רעיא הוה עבדך לאבוהי בענא ואתא אריא ואף דובא ונסיב אמרא מעדרא:
medra amra wnsyb dwba wap arya watha bena labwhy ebdk hwh reya lshawl dwd wamr
David said to Saul, “Your servant was keeping his father’s sheep; and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock,

ונפקית בתרוהי ומחיתיה ושזיבתיה מפומיה וקם עלי ואחדית בלועיה ומחיתיה וקטלתיה:
wqTlthyh wmkhythyh blweyh wakhdyth ely wqm mpwmyh wshzybthyh wmkhythyh bthrwhy wnpqyth
I went out after him, struck him, and rescued it out of his mouth. When he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, struck him, and killed him.
36
אף ית אריא אף דבא קטל עבדך ויהי פלשתאה ערלא הדין כחד מנהון ארי חסד סדרי עמא דיי קימא:
qyma dyy ema sdry khsd ary mnhwn kkhd hdyn erla plshthah wyhy ebdk qTl dba ap arya yth ap
Your servant struck both the lion and the bear. This uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, since he has defied the armies of the living God.”
37
ואמר דוד יי דשיזבני מידא דאריא ומידא דדובא הוא ישיזבינני מידא דפלשתאה הדין ואמר שאול לדוד אזיל ומימרא דיי יהי בסעדך:
bsedk yhy dyy wmymra azyl ldwd shawl wamr hdyn dplshthah myda yshyzbynny hwa ddwba wmyda darya myda dshyzbny yy dwd wamr
David said, “Yahweh, who delivered me out of the paw of the lion and out of the paw of the bear, will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “Go! Yahweh will be with you.”
38
ואלביש שאול ית דוד לבושוהי ויהב קולס דנחש על רישיה ואלביש יתיה שרינא:
shryna ythyh walbysh ryshyh el dnkhsh qwls wyhb lbwshwhy dwd yth shawl walbysh
Saul dressed David with his clothing. He put a helmet of bronze on his head, and he clad him with a coat of mail.
39
וזריז דוד ית חרביה מעל ללבושוהי ולא אבא למיזל ארי לא אליף ואמר דוד לשאול לית אנא יכיל למיזל באלין ארי לית בהון נסא ואעדינון דוד מעלווהי:
melwwhy dwd waedynwn nsa bhwn lyth ary balyn lmyzl ykyl ana lyth lshawl dwd wamr alyp la ary lmyzl aba wla llbwshwhy mel khrbyh yth dwd wzryz
David strapped his sword on his clothing and he tried to move, for he had not tested it. David said to Saul, “I can’t go with these, for I have not tested them.” Then David took them off.
40
ונסיב חוטריה בידיה ובחר ליה חמשא שעיעי אבניא מן נחלא ושוי יתהון במאן רעיא די ליה ובתרמיליה וקלעיה בידיה וקריב לות פלשתאה:
plshthah lwth wqryb bydyh wqleyh wbthrmylyh lyh dy reya bman ythhwn wshwy nkhla mn abnya sheyey khmsha lyh wbkhr bydyh khwTryh wnsyb
He took his staff in his hand, and chose for himself five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag which he had. His sling was in his hand; and he came near to the Philistine.
41
ואזל פלשתאה אזיל וקריב לות דוד וגברא נטיל תריסא קדמוהי:
qdmwhy thrysa nTyl wgbra dwd lwth wqryb azyl plshthah wazl
The Philistine walked and came near to David; and the man who bore the shield went before him.
42
ואסתכי פלשתאה וחזא ית דוד ושטיה ארי הוה יניק וסמוק שפיר בריויה:
brywyh shpyr wsmwq ynyq hwh ary wshTyh dwd yth wkhza plshthah wasthky
When the Philistine looked around and saw David, he disdained him; for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and had a good looking face.
43
ואמר פלשתאה לדוד הכלבא שטי אנא דאת אתי עלי בחוטריא וליט פלשתאה ית דוד בטעותיה:
bTewthyh dwd yth plshthah wlyT bkhwTrya ely athy dath ana shTy hklba ldwd plshthah wamr
The Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” The Philistine cursed David by his gods.
44
ואמר פלשתאה לדוד איתא לותי ואתן ית בסרך לעופא דשמיא ולבעירא דארעא:
darea wlbeyra dshmya lewpa bsrk yth wathn lwthy aytha ldwd plshthah wamr
The Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the sky and to the animals of the field.”
45
ואמר דוד לפלשתאה את אתי עלי בחרבא ובמורניתא וברומחא ואנא אתי עלך בשמא דיי צבאות אלהא דסדרי ישראל דחסדתא:
dkhsdtha yshral dsdry alha tsbawth dyy bshma elk athy wana wbrwmkha wbmwrnytha bkhrba ely athy ath lplshthah dwd wamr
Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin; but I come to you in the name of Yahweh of Armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
46
יומא הדין ימסרינך יי בידי ואקטלינך ואעדי ית רישך מנך ואתן פגול משרית פלשתאי יומא הדין לעופא דשמיא ולחיות ארעא וידעון כל דירי ארעא דאית אלהא בישראל:
byshral alha dayth area dyry kl wydewn area wlkhywth dshmya lewpa hdyn ywma plshthay mshryth pgwl wathn mnk ryshk yth waedy waqTlynk bydy yy ymsrynk hdyn ywma
Today, Yahweh will deliver you into my hand. I will strike you and take your head from off you. I will give the dead bodies of the army of the Philistines today to the birds of the sky and to the wild animals of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel,
47
וידעון כל קהלא הדין ארי לא בחרבא ובמורניתא פריק יי ארי מן קדם יי נצחן קרביא וימסר יתכון בידנא:
bydna ythkwn wymsr qrbya ntskhn yy qdm mn ary yy pryq wbmwrnytha bkhrba la ary hdyn qhla kl wydewn
and that all this assembly may know that Yahweh doesn’t save with sword and spear; for the battle is Yahweh’s, and he will give you into our hand.”
48
והוה כד קם פלשתאה ואזל וקרב לקדמות דוד ואוחי דוד ורהט לסדרא לקדמות פלשתאה:
plshthah lqdmwth lsdra wrhT dwd wawkhy dwd lqdmwth wqrb wazl plshthah qm kd whwh
When the Philistine arose, and walked and came near to meet David, David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.

ואושיט דוד ית ידיה למנא ונסיב מתמן אבנא ואקלע בקלעא ומחא ית פלשתאה על בית עינוהי וטבעת אבנא בבית עינוהי ונפל על אפוהי על ארעא:
area el apwhy el wnpl eynwhy bbyth abna wTbeth eynwhy byth el plshthah yth wmkha bqlea waqle abna mthmn wnsyb lmna ydyh yth dwd wawshyT
David put his hand in his bag, took a stone and slung it, and struck the Philistine in his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth.
50
ותקיף דוד מן פלשתאה בקלעא ובאבנא ומחא ית פלשתאה וקטליה וחרבא לית בידא דדוד:
ddwd byda lyth wkhrba wqTlyh plshthah yth wmkha wbabna bqlea plshthah mn dwd wthqyp
So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him; but there was no sword in David’s hand.

ורהט דוד וקם על פלשתאה ונסיב ית חרביה ושלפא מנדנה וקטליה ופסק ביה ית רישיה וחזו פלשתאי ארי מית גברהון ואפיכו:
wapykw gbrhwn myth ary plshthay wkhzw ryshyh yth byh wpsq wqTlyh mndnh wshlpa khrbyh yth wnsyb plshthah el wqm dwd wrhT
Then David ran, stood over the Philistine, took his sword, drew it out of its sheath, killed him, and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.

וקמו אנשי ישראל ויהודה ויביבו ורדפו ית פלשתאי עד מעלנא דגיא ועד תרעי עקרון ונפלו קטולי פלשתאי באורח שערים ועד גת ועד עקרון:
eqrwn wed gth wed sherym bawrkh plshthay qTwly wnplw eqrwn threy wed dgya melna ed plshthay yth wrdpw wybybw wyhwdh yshral anshy wqmw
The men of Israel and of Judah arose and shouted, and pursued the Philistines as far as Gai and to the gates of Ekron. The wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath and to Ekron.
53
ותבו בני ישראל מלמרדף בתר פלשתאי ובזו ית משריתהון:
mshrythhwn yth wbzw plshthay bthr mlmrdp yshral bny wthbw
The children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they plundered their camp.
54
ונסיב דוד ית רישא דפלשתאה ואיתיה לירושלם וית זיניה שוי במשכניה:
bmshknyh shwy zynyh wyth lyrwshlm waythyh dplshthah rysha yth dwd wnsyb
David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent.

וכד חזא שאול ית דוד נפיק לקדמות פלשתאי אמר לאבנר רב חילא בר מן דין עולימא אבנר ואמר אבנר חיי נפשך מלכא אם ידע אנא:
ana yde am mlka npshk khyy abnr wamr abnr ewlyma dyn mn br khyla rb labnr amr plshthay lqdmwth npyq dwd yth shawl khza wkd
When Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the captain of the army, “Abner, whose son is this youth?” Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I can’t tell.”

ואמר מלכא שאל את בר מן דין עולימא:
ewlyma dyn mn br ath shal mlka wamr
The king said, “Inquire whose son the young man is!”
57
וכד תב דוד מלמקטל ית פלשתאה ודבר יתיה אבנר ואיתיה קדם שאול ורישא דפלשתאה בידיה:
bydyh dplshthah wrysha shawl qdm waythyh abnr ythyh wdbr plshthah yth mlmqTl dwd thb wkd
As David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.
